UW-RF Student Receives International Scholarship
APRIL 7, 2006--University of Wisconsin-River Falls senior Jackie Eckblad,
a double major in German and biotechnology from Red Wing, Minn., was awarded
with a U.S. Congress- Bundestag (German Parliament) Scholarship.
Eckblad, along with 75 youths from the United States, will participate
in one year of involvement with the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange
for Young Professionals in Germany. “The goal is for us to become
integrated into German society and be diplomatic representatives of the
U.S.,” says Eckblad.
The program starts in August and has three phases totaling one year. After
two months of language school, Eckblad will spend five months studying
at a German University and the next five months completing an internship
with a biotechnology company in the country. She will live with a host
family.
“These accolades merit broad recognition,” said UW-RF Chancellor
Don Betz of the award. “People diplomacy has such serious potential
to build the right connections.”
Says Peter Johansson of the UW-RF modern language department, “These
awards are quite prestigious and a testament to the quality of students
we have at UW-RF.”
Eckblad will graduate from UW-RF in May. She has been a member of the
UW-RF rugby team for the past five years and represented UW-RF on the
Minnesota U-23 select side rugby team for four years.
