South African Traditions Explored at Workshop
APRIL 7, 2006--The health and human performance department at the University
of Wisconsin – River Falls is once again set to offer its popular
annual Emogene Nelson workshop. This year's event features an interactive
teacher’s workshop highlighting the traditional games, dances, rhythms
and cultural symbols of South Africa, and will be held from 9 a.m. to
3p.m. on April 21 in Dance Studio No. 10 in Karges Center.
At 11 a.m. a video documentary, “My Life Under Apartheid”
will accompany a keynote lecture in the Regent’s Room of the Hagestad
Student Center by Eleanor W. Gwynn, interim chair of the department of
visual and performing arts at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical
State University. Gwynn has more 30 years of experience in the field of
education and dance and is also the artistic director of the E. Gwynn
Dancers. She holds a doctorate in dance from the University of Wisconsin
– Madison as well as a master’s degree in dance from the University
of North Carolina – Greensboro.
Gwynn is a celebrated world traveler, having received two Fulbright scholarships
and having studied and conducted research in Puerto Rico, Egypt, Jamaica,
South America, West Africa and Cuba. Until recently, Gwynn also worked
in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Emogene Nelson workshop is co-sponsored by the Northwest District
of the Wisconsin Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation,
and the UW-RF College of Education and Professional Studies Cultural Diversity
Committee.
The workshop is named after the late 1982 Distinguished Alumna, Emogene
A. Nelson. Nelson was the first woman named to the Athletic Hall of Fame
in 1983, and was the president of the Wisconsin Association for Health,
Physical Education, and Recreation. During her tenure at UW-RF, she coached
women's basketball, softball, and track, and advised the Women's Recreation
Association and Delta Psi Kappa. Nelson was also a member of the UW-RF
Faculty Senate.
Cost of the workshop for students is $10 if registered before April 14
and $15 if registered after April 14. A non-student registration fee is
$25 before April 14, and $30 after April 14. The non-student registration
fee includes a $5 lunch voucher.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and to be prepared
for movement.
