Students Help Community During Earth Week
APRIL 7, 2006--UW-RF students are coming together to help the community
and to bring awareness about environmental issues during Earth Week, April
16 - 24.
To celebrate Earth Day, the Earth Consciousness Organization at UW-RF
is conducting a "Drive to Not Drive" event on April 19. The
group is encouraging students, faculty and community members to take alternative
means of transportation on this day. On the day of the event, anyone participating
in the "Drive to Not Drive" is welcomed to go to the Hagestad
Student Center lawn on campus for free breakfast (first-come, first-served)
and to register for prizes, including include T-shirts, CDs and gift certificates
to local businesses. ECO is currently working with Great Rivers Transit
to offer no-cost community bus service for Twin Cities commuters. For

meets each Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Student Center.
The UW-RF Student Leadership Center is planning a Volunteer Day to help
clean-up the community on Earth Day, April 22. The day begins at 8:30
a.m. Volunteers will receive free breakfast, lunch and a t-shirt. Volunteers
will help clean up grounds around public areas, on campus, state parks,
as well local organizations, including Growing Kids Christian Day Care,
Lutheran Home Nursing Home, REM Wisconsin, Turning Point and others. For

Other events during Earth Week and sponsored by the ECO club will help
create awareness of the environment, including tree planting and clean-up
of South Fork. Plant and Earth Science Professor Robert Baker will speak
about global climate change on April 20 at 4 p.m. in the Regent’s
Room of the Student Center. For more information contact the leadership
