RACE/RELIGION SPOKEN WORD ARTISTS PERFORM

JAN. 27, 2006--A symposium on race and religion at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls as part of the Wyman Series will feature three slam poets at the North Hall Auditorium on Monday, Feb. 6 at 8 p.m.

Three spoken-word artists will perform their politically charged poetry to inspire a dialogue with the audience. The three performers are from very diverse backgrounds: Byonn Bain, is a Harvard Law School graduate who was wrongfully arrested by New York city police; Jason Carney is a former skinhead from Texas, and Kevin Coval is a poet, emcee, essayist, activist and educator from Cape Town, South Africa.

Through the art of spoken word, the trio hopes that audiences will gain a better understanding of race and religious issues in the current state of American and world politics. 

The UW-RF Performing Arts Committee andthe Diversity Awareness committee, both part of the Student Leadership Center's Development and Programming Board, sponsor the Wyman Series. Funding for the series is provided in part by student fees, which are ultimately allocated to various student organizations and committees.
