Foundation Announces Grants

MAY 13, 2005--The University of Wisconsin-River Falls Foundation Board Chairman Jeff McCardle announced $54,000 in grant awards to nine faculty members who submitted proposals. The UW-RF Foundation also awarded a total of $10,000 in summer stipends to four students conducting on-campus research.

The UW-RF Foundation provides support for summer research to give students the opportunity to be engaged in projects that apply their learned analytical and creative skills.

"These students have very interesting projects," said Bill Campbell, UW-RF director of grants and research. "These projects take a lot of concentrated time, and these summer stipends allow students to really focus on their research projects."

The following students are receiving summer stipends:
Britanny Brenner of Ellsworth, Wis., will work on a study titled, "Synthesis of halogenated N-acylated aromatic amines and capsaicin receptor antagonist."
Katherine Phalen of Somerset, Wis., is conducting a research project titled, "The Synthesis of meta-Chloro- and meta-Bromo-Analogs of Capsaicin: Potential New Analgesic Agents."
Brooke Shepherd of LaCrosse, Wis., will carry out a project titled, "Reviewing for Exams: Do Crossword Puzzles help in the Success of Student Learning?"
Nathan Wilber of River Falls, Wis., is conducting a study titled, "Diverse Workforce Acceptance on Western Wisconsin Dairy Farms and Communities."

Faculty grant proposals were evaluated on how the financial support would improve the quality of education students receive, improve teaching performance and enhance research.

The UW-RF Foundation grants review committee also considered how the projects advance the stature of the university, college and department, expand the faculty member's body of knowledge and add to the faculty-student experience.

The following faculty received grants:
Health and human performance Professor Debra Allyn received a grant to support the purchase of a digital motion analysis system.
Plant and earth science Professors Bill Anderson, Roger Swanson and Don Taylor will use their grant to implement laboratory exercises for an oceanography course.
Professor Bill Cordua of mineralogy and geology received financial support for the implementation of laboratory exercises for an oceanography course.
Journalism Professor Sandy Ellis was awarded a grant for digital broadcasting equipment for television news photography and documentary production.
Art Professor Lynn Jermal received support for instructional technology for art education laboratory classes and to document off-site creative research projects.
Steve Kelm, professor and department chair of animal and food science, will use his grant to support studies on dairy production management.
Physics Assistant Professor Matthew Vonk received support for a research-grade digital camera system for astronomy research.
