UW-RF Shares Staff, Student Research

MAY 13, 2005--UW-River Falls faculty, staff and students presented poster displays of their research and exchange information at the annual Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity Day in April in the Hagestad Student Center.

Approximately 70 posters developed by students, faculty and staff from the five UW-RF colleges showed the scope of their research, scholarly and creative work.

Bill Campbell, administrative advisor for Society of Undergraduate Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities, said the event is a great way to cap off the academic year. "One of the most powerful ways to engage students is to involve them in projects where they can apply the analytical and creative tools they have learned in their courses to a genuine problem, design a way to answer it, and defend the answer they reach before their peers and faculty."

The posters represented student-faculty research, collaborations on honors projects, and creative endeavors from every corner of the campus. Most of the posters were student-faculty collaborations.
SURSCA faculty advisor Tim Lyden said the event was a success. "More posters were presented than ever before. Among the presentations were interesting and innovative approaches ranging from music education to drinking water analysis looking at ground water contamination. Participants and the audience truly represented the entire range of research, scholarly and creative activities conducted here on campus."

Ranging from a content analysis of the 2004 presidential to yogurt and cheese research, research presented at the poster session included:
• Determination of the Rotation Rate for Minor Planet #4006 Sandler
• Using Geographic Information systems to Analyze Karst Topography in Woodville, Wis.
• Word Usage Analysis of Presidential Debates
• A Model System to Test Capsaicin Analogs on Receptor-mediated Calcium Influx
• Effect of Stabilizer Formulations on Viscosity of Yogurt
• Self-Efficacy and Performance in English Language Learners
• Comparison of Bacterial Levels in Organic Versus Conventional Fruits and Vegetables
• Worms are What they Eat: Disrupting the sia-1 gene in C. elegans
• An Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy Assay for the Determination of Lead in Drinking Water
• The Integration of James Meredith into Ole Miss
• Fresh Water Sharks of Nicaragua
• Synthesis and Characterization of N-Phenethylpyridinecarboxamides as Potential Inducers of Apoptosis
• Does Effort Impact the Earnings of Female and Male Self-Employed in St. Croix County Wisconsin: A Preliminary Analysis
