New Principal Licensure Program

APRIL 15, 2005--A new licensure program for principals will begin in June
2005, offered jointly by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and the
University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.
The program focuses on 21 competencies identified by the National Educational
Policy Board necessary to become a successful principal. While Wisconsin
requires a master's degree for certification, those seeking principal
certification in Minnesota must also obtain an education specialist degree.
Approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the
program meets certification requirements for K-12 principals in both private
and public school settings. Those seeking principal licensure in Minnesota
can earn the required educational specialist degree by taking additional
courses at St. Thomas.
Students can earn a master of arts in educational administration from
the University of St. Thomas by completing the 30 licensure credits plus
one three-credit class. Students who enter the program with a master's
degree may obtain an education specialist degree through St. Thomas by
taking two additional classes for a total of three credits.
The first course in the program, Leadership Development Seminar I, will
be held 8:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. June 13-July 1 in Room 121 of the Wyman
Education Building at UW-RF campus.
In fall semester 2005, courses on oral communications and principalship
for K-12, will be offered. In spring semester 2005-06, courses include
the Politics of Education and School Law. In summer 2006, participants
enroll in Leadership Development Seminar II, and in fall semester 2006,
courses in finance/budget, professional development/pedagogical supervision
are offered as well as an internship, seminar and individual project.
Finally, in the spring 2007, classes include student services and K-12
curriculum as well as internship, seminar and project will be included.
