Noted Author, Sociologist to Speak

APRIL 15, 2005--Dalton Conley, an award-winning author, sociologist and cultural critic will speak about race at 8 p.m. on April 27 in the North Hall Auditorium at UW-River Falls.

Conley will discuss his experiences growing up as a white minority in a Latino and African-American housing project in New York's Lower East Side and the lessons he learned about race and class that apply to everyone.

Conley is a professor of sociology and public policy at New York University. In addition, he is the director of NYU's Center for Advanced Social Science Research. His scholarly research focuses on how socioeconomic status is transmitted across generations, racial inequalities, the measurement of class and social status, and how health and biology affect social position.

Conley is author of "Being Black, Living in Red: Race, Wealth and Social policy in America", the memoir "Honky," and "The Starting Gate: Birth Weight and Life Chances." His latest book is "The Pecking Order; Which Siblings Succeed and Why."

This public event is free for UW-RF students and $5 for nonstudents. The Bridges Series is sponsored by the UW-RF Diversity Awareness Committee and is intended to foster a sense of acceptance, understanding and cooperation among members of the community.
