By Jenny Bjelland
UW-RF News Bureau
APRIL 8, 2005--Teams from 16 major agricultural universities throughout
the Midwest, including the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, gathered
in Des Moines, Iowa, on March 20-21 to compete in the 2005 Midwest Academic
Quadrathlon.
The 16 teams, each consisting of four undergraduate students, took part
in a two-day competition to test their knowledge of animal science, dairy
science, poultry science and small animal science. The four-part quadrathlon
includes a written exam, a lab practicum, an extemporaneous oral presentation,
and a quiz bowl competition.
The UW-RF team earned a trip to the Midwest regional contest after winning
all four portions at the local UW-RF contest. The team includes Sherman
Wilson, a junior agricultural education major from Reedsburg, Wis., Matt
Allerson, a junior dairy science major from Nicollet, Minn., Jared Voge,
a junior animal science major from Eagle River, Wis., and Kory Duerst,
a junior agricultural studies major from Verona, Wis.
At the regional competition the team took eighth in the written exam,
seventh in the lab practicum, 11th in the extemporaneous oral presentation
and ninth in the quiz bowl competition. That combination earned the team
an eighth place overall finish.
Iowa State University claimed first place in the overall competition with
the Ohio State University placing second and Michigan State University
placing third.
The Midwest Academic Quadrathlon was sponsored by the Midwest Section
of the American Society for Animal Science and the Midwest Region American
Dairy Science Association. The competition was also held in conjunction
with their 2005 joint meeting, allowing students to attend scientific
presentations and to network with agricultural industry representatives.
