Faculty, Staff Celebrate Achievements

FEB. 25, 3005--The respected works of UW-River Falls' faculty and staff were on display from Feb. 14 to 25 in the Harriet Barry Gallery in the Chalmer Davee Library, to help celebrate their research, scholarship and creative activities.

During the past year, nearly 100 UW-RF faculty and staff participated in scholarly activities outside of their regular teaching and academic duties. Approximately 40 projects were selected for the display.

The display included papers, journal articles, books, playbills, visual art works and material pertinent to successful grant requests produced by UW-RF faculty and staff.

All work was published, presented, displayed or funded during the 2004 calendar year and represents the achievements produced by faculty and staff outside the classroom seeking to enrich the campus and the community.

The Chalmer Davee Library, the UW-RF office of the provost and the UW-RF office of grants and research sponsored the third annual event.

Some highlights included art Professor Lynn Jermal's information on a collaborative mural project, "The Life of the Middle-Schooler" that was created by eight UW-RF art students and 40 middle-schoolers from Hudson. John Heppen, a professor in the geography department, exhibited his book reviews of geography texts published in several journals including "Progress in Human Geography" and "Regional Studies."

College of Business and Economic Dean Barbara Nemecek provided information on an upcoming entrepreneurship conference funded by an Excel Energy grant; Professor Claire Kilian's journal articles and conference papers explored business cases involving Ashley Automotive, the Bijani twins, and Zelte USA. Professor Darryl Miller's ongoing historical look at stereotypes of the elderly in television commercials was published in the International Journal of Aging and Human Development.

Political Science Professor Suzy Roger's short fiction titled "Princess" was published in "Women Behaving Badly," and Rachel Perry Evju, of the Office of University Advancement, shared her choreography project for "Letting Go," an award-winning dance number performed by Helmer Dance Studios of Hudson and Beldenville.

Tim Buttles and Bonnie Walters, College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences professors who are married, co-authored an academic poster on "A Deeper Understanding of Molecular Genetics."

Grants activities authored and administered by various faculty in the College of Education and Professional Studies included the Western Wisconsin Partnership and Upward Bound, funded by the U.S. Department of Education; Better Teachers through PK-16 Partnerships and Developing Productive K-16 Partnerships funded by the UW System, as well as gathering and assessing resiliency data for youth with disabilities funded by UW-RF Faculty Research Grants.
