Center for Economic Research Hosts Seminars

The Center for Economic Research at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls has announced its upcoming seminars for the 2005 spring semester.

The seminars are free and open to the public. Presentations begin at 3:15 p.m. in Room 321 of South Hall, preceded by refreshments at 3 p.m. in Room 317 of South Hall.

Scheduled seminars include:
• Feb. 18, "New CEO Experience and Lineage Effects on the Magnitude and Timing of Change and on Organizational Performance," presented by Jude Rathburn, UW-RF professor of management.
• March 11, "Rural Development and Microenterprise credit: Strategies that work for Low-Income Women and Their Families in Rural Latin America," presented by Jackie Brux, UW-RF professor of economics.
• April 15, "Lean Six Sigma," presented by Fazi Amirahmadi, senior management engineer, Northwest Wisconsin Manufacturing Outreach Center, UW-Stout.
• April 22, "Escalation of Commitment in Software Projects: Some Findings," presented by Arpan Jani, UW-RF professor of computer science and information systems.
• May 6, "An Analysis of the Characteristics of Financial Service Company Logos" present by Darryl Miller, UW-RF professor of marketing.

Located within the College of Business and Economics, the center encourages and assists in research that supports economic development in the region.

While the focus of the center is on encouraging faculty to engage in scholarly research, it also encourages the presentation of interdisciplinary research to enrich the knowledge of the greater community.

Since its inception, the center has actively engaged and participated in economic development issues in the St. Croix Valley, says director Hamid Tabesh, who is a professor of what at UW-RF. Acting as a liaison for the college to the region, the center helps to identify the expertise faculty can offer to the business community.

The center also assists faculty in the pursuit of grants to fund appropriate research, identifies research projects that meet economic development needs of the St. Croix Valley, supports and encourages collaboration and the exchange of ideas between faculty and staff, among other functions. Additionally, it provides an outlet for the presentation of scholarly research activity in the form of seminars.
