Classes for Seniors Offered in March, April

FEB. 5, 2005--Area residents age 50 and up are invited by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Outreach Office to register for the next 2004-05 Senior Outreach Studies classes.

The class, "Morning with a Professor," begins Tuesday, March 8, and the class "The Rural Facts," begins Thursday, March 10. Class is held from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays or Thursdays, respectively, for four weeks in the President's Room of Hagestad Student Center.

Each class consists of a presentation, coffee break and discussion period. Limited parking is available in the lot at the corner of Oak and Spring streets. Permits will be issued the first day of class.

Current Senior Outreach members will receive information regarding classes through the mail. Each four-session class costs $19 for members and $25 for non-members. An annual Senior Outreach membership is $10. Tuesday's "Morning with a Professor," will be presented by UW-RF faculty, who offer their experience, study and knowledge on interesting topics. Topics include:

• March 8, "The Sandwich Generation-Between Elderly Parents and Teenagers," presented by Roger Ballou, dean of student development and campus diversity.
• March 15, "Tsunami: Social and Scientific Implications," presented by Ian Williams, professor, plant and earth sciences department.
• March 29, "Biotechnology-What is It? And How Has It Affected (or Will Affect) Your Life," presented by Bill Anderson, professor, plant and earth sciences department.
• April 5, "Sustainability? If That's the Question, What are We Waiting for?" by Kelly Cain, professor, plant and earth sciences department."

Thursday's, "The Rural Facts," will feature discussions by UW-RF faculty and community members, who will share their knowledge of and personal experience with various aspects of rural living, organic farming and environmental concerns. The class will cover the following issues:

• March 10, "Spirit of the St. Croix," presented by John Weingberg, park ranger from the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
• March 17, "Community Homestead--A Non-Profit Rural Community," presented by Christine Elmquist, coordinator from Community Homestead in Osceola, Wis.
• March 31, "Organic Farming--The Benefits of Buying Local Produce," presented by Tom Parent from Whole Foods Grocery in River Falls, Wis.
• April 7, "Quality of Life Related to Rural-Urban Transitions," presented by David Trechter, professor in the UW-RF agriculture business department.
