National Ag Magazine Cites UW-RF Prof and Local Farm

DEC. 3, 2004--University of Wisconsin River-Falls dairy science Professor Dennis Cooper of rural River Falls was recently cited in the national agricultural magazine Successful Farming.

The article, "It's simple: Got (more) milk," featured Cooper's suggestions on how to improve operations at the Huppert Brothers Farm near River Falls, Wis., after owner Jason Kjos asked him to conduct a management analysis of the farm.

In addition to being a faculty member at UW-RF, Cooper serves as an UW-Extension dairy specialist. In the article Cooper shared his knowledge of dairy farms and dairy nutrition to recommend better management styles between first lactation cows and older cows. Older cows may decrease the farm's cull rate of young cows and improve the overall success of the herd, said Cooper.
