UW-RF Women Leaders Attend Eau Claire Conference
NOV. 12, 2004--Several women leaders at the University of Wisconsin-River
Falls attended the 2004 Conference of Wisconsin Women in Higher Education
Leadership [WWHEL] on Oct. 14-15 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
According to local WWHEL organizers Susan Harrison and Lisa Theo, it was
the largest gathering of female academic leaders in WWHEL’s seven-year
history.
Attending from UW-River Falls campus were speech communication and theatre
Arts chairperson and Professor Barbara Werner, modern language Professor
Margarita Hendrickson, teacher education Professor Stephanie Harty, social
work Professor Ruth Kalms, Special Assistant to the Chancellor Suzanne
Hagen, Admissions Counselor Carolyn Brady, Dean Connie Foster of the College
of Education and Professional Studies, and Provost & Vice Chancellor
for Academic Affairs Ginny Coombs.
The conference, titled "Confluence: Celebrating Women with Vision,"
brought more than 125 women from 31 educational institutions to sessions
on such topics as media stereotypes, misogynist language, perceptions
of women, and gender interactions.
Other participants included staff from UW-Eau Claire, UW-Platteville,
UW-La Crosse, UW- Stevens Point, UW-Stout, Chippewa Valley Technical College,
Blackhawk Technical College, and Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College
The first WWHEL Outstanding Achievement Award was presented at the conference
to Mary Dee Wenniger, founder and editor of Women in Higher Education.
Since 1992, this monthly international publication has enhanced leadership
opportunities for women.
WWHEL also recognized Karen Knox, president of Southwest Wisconsin Technical
College, who has been appointed by the Office of Women in Higher Education
of the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C., as the WWHEL
Presidential Sponsor.
Through affiliation with ACE, WWHEL seeks to increase the number and power
of women in Wisconsin higher education by providing professional development
opportunities to support women administrators and by eliminating barriers
to women's achievement in higher education leadership.
Since 1997, WWHEL's mission has been to identify future women leaders,
to provide contacts and support for women moving into leadership positions,
to eliminate barriers to women’s advancement, and to increase visibility
of women leaders. WWHEL welcomes women in any leadership position at public
and private colleges and universities as well as those who aspire to leadership
positions at any level. It also encourages networking and mentoring. WWHEL
is sponsored by various public and private college and universities in
Wisconsin.
