UW-RF Hosts Minnesota FFA Judging Contest

NOV. 12, 2004--University of Wisconsin-River Falls students and faculty hosted 352 high school students from 33 Minnesota high schools for the 18th Annual Region 8 Minnesota FFA Judging Contest recently.

High school students competed in one of five contest areas including dairy foods, dairy cattle, horse, general livestock, and poultry evaluation.

Hatty Rossow, a student from Jackson County Central, placed as the 2004 top individual in the dairy foods judging contest. Jackson County Central then went on to win first place in the team competition for the dairy foods contest area.

Randolph High School claimed the first place team title for the dairy cattle evaluation contest with Randolph student, Sarah Larson, receiving top individual.

The horse evaluation team contest was won by the Ag and Food Science Academy. Andi David led the Ag and Food Science Academy team by receiving high individual for the horse evaluation contest.

Erick Larson, from Atwater-Cosmo-Grove City, claimed the individual title in general livestock evaluation, but it was Zumbrota-Mazeppa that came away with the team title.

In the poultry judging contest, Ruby Swain of Stewartville received the top individual while leading the Stewartville team to a first place finish.

Five UW-RF faculty members and nearly 50 UW-RF students assisted in organizing and leading the competition. Agricultural education Professor Tim Buttles, served as the contest coordinator.

Crystal Heath, a senior agricultural education major from Whitehall, Wis., served as the student coordinator. Judges for the contest consisted of a faculty member from each respective department with the exception of Amanda Huppert, a UW-RF student and food science technology major, who served as the dairy foods evaluation judge.
