UW-River Falls has condensed its Learning Disabilities (LD) Teacher Certification program so you can fast-track completion of the requirements in just one calendar year, or take a second year to complete the program if you need the extra time.

This program was created to meet the most current standards of Wisconsin DPI for certification as a Learning Disabilities Teacher and is taught by UWRF faculty who are experts in the field, and have experience teaching students with learning disabilities in a K-12 setting.

Program Curriculum

NOTE: The catalog name for the following courses was changed from Psychology (PSYC) to Special Education (SPED) beginning Summer 2008.

Offered in Summer:
SPED 750 Assessment and Diagnosis of Exceptional Children, 3 credits
SPED 755 Interventions for Students with Learning Disabilities, 3 credits

Offered in Fall:
SPED 751 Assessment and Diagnosis of Exceptional Children - Practicum, 2 credits
SPED 756 Interventions for Students with Learning Disabilities - Practicum, 2 credits

Offered in Spring:
SPED 778 Learning Disabilities Practicum/Student Teaching, 3 credits
SPSY 622 Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, 3 credits (may be taken either year)

Prerequisite Courses:
SPED 330/530 The Exceptional Child, 3 credits
SPED 420/620 Introduction to Learning Disabilities, 3 credits
Certified teachers other than elementary educators may need reading, math and/or language arts courses for certification.

Admission Requirements

  • Completed application for graduate study at UWRF with $45 processing fee.
  • An earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Official transcripts from each institution attended, sent directly to Graduate Studies from the institution.
  • An overall undergraduate grade point average of at least 2.75 (on a four-point scale) or a graduate GPA of at least 3.0 in 12 or more graduate credits.
  • Wisconsin teaching licensure, elementary or secondary
