Competency in the English language, as established by the results of a standardized English examination, is required of all international students from non-English speaking countries. Except in unusual circumstances, proof of proficiency must be established before Graduate Studies makes a decision on admission.
The university requires a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based version of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or 80 on the Internet-based version of the TOEFL for all graduate programs.
Another standardized test which may be taken to prove English language proficiency is the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). The university requires a minimum IELTS band score of 6.5 for all graduate programs.
To be considered for admission, test scores must be submitted to the Graduate Studies office directly from the testing institution. Students may not send in a copy of their test scores.
Graduate Studies requires that international applicants provide evidence of financial support sufficient for a twelve-month period (the usual time required to complete a degree). The certification of financial support may take the form of a combination of any of the following:
1. The award of a graduate assistantship by Graduate Studies; or
2. Sponsorship by a government agency or other organization assuming complete responsibility for financial needs; or
3. Certificate of Deposit filed with the university business office or a local bank.
Financial assistance, in the form of a partial waiver of out-of-state tuition, is available to a limited number of foreign applicants. Please contact the Director of International Programs.
Each applicant from abroad should understand that there is no assurance of employment while in residence at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
International students must participate in health and accident insurance through a policy administered by the university. Payment is part of the billing process for each grading period.
Students transferring from other colleges or universities must meet the transfer student qualifications in addition to the general requirements for all international students.
