Nylander Named Vice Chancellor for Administration & Finance

UW-River Falls assistant chancellor Virgil Nylander was recently named vice chancellor for administration and finance.

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved the title change at its regular meeting on Nov. 10.

Chancellor Gary A. Thibodeau said that he sought the title change for Nylander because of its reflection on the importance of budgetary and administrative issues to the University as its launches "Reach for the Future," its 5-year program to restructure the institution for the 21st Century.

"This title more accurately reflects the breadth of responsibility and the critical nature of the analysis and review of all University fiscal and administrative tasks during this challenging fiscal environment," Thibodeau said.

The chancellor noted that Nylander "brings to his role as vice chancellor a wealth of experience and an in-depth understanding of the University, its people, and programs. He is viewed by the faculty as a trusted and respected colleague and by students as a knowledgeable administrator who is accessible and supportive."

The change in Nylander's position follows the recent restructuring of the position of vice chancellor for academic affairs to include the responsibilities of provost. That allows Provost Robert Milam to act in Thibodeau's absence.

"A three-person central University leadership team provides for a leaner and more responsive administration," Thibodeau said. "Having Bob Milam and Virgil Nylander working with me as the chief academic officer and the chief fiscal officer provides the opportunities for many efficiencies."

Milam also expressed his approval with the appointment. "I'm delighted with the change in the title for Dr. Virgil Nylander. As faculty, staff and students position the University for the 21st Century, it is very comforting to know that we have a Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance with years of budgetary and fiscal experience. Dr. Nylander's administrative and academic experience, combined with an established reputation of being open and fair, will serve the University well as we implement our 'Reach for the Future Plans' during a period when resources will be limited and possibly declining."

Faculty Senate President Phil George added his support. "Obviously, it is a well-deserved honor as recognition for the level and type of work he has been doing for the University. From a personal standpoint, I'm very pleased for Virgil. I consider him to be a friend. He is one those at the University that I always refer to as a 'total effort employee.' He is always working long, hard hours for the University."

Nylander was appointed to the position of assistant chancellor for administration in 1987 and assumed oversight of financial matters with the retirement of assistant chancellor Ted Kuether in 1991.

He joined the University in 1969 as a faculty member in the psychology department, and served as chair from 1979-1984, then assumed the position of associate dean in the College of Education from 1984 to 1987.

Nylander holds a doctorate in experimental physiological psychology from Iowa State, with bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology from Colorado State University.
