Tour Greece This Summer
This summer students, faculty and community members can have the opportunity
to travel across the ancient ruins of Greece in the UW-River Falls Experience
Greece Tour from May 18-June 2.
Tour participants will explore several historic sites located in Athens, including
the Acropolis, Atticus Theatre, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Panathenean
Stadium, where the first modern-day Olympics were held in 1896.
Travelers will grace other cities such as Delphi, where Oedipus slew his father,
and Olympia, where the original Olympic games were held in 776 B.C. In Olympia,
participants will have the chance to compete in UW-RF’s own mini-Olympic
foot race, a 15-year tradition established by Nicholas Karolides, UW-RF English
professor and associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The visit also includes in-depth tours of several ancient islands. Travelers
will visit the archaeological sites of Knossos on Crete, an active dig of Akrotori
on Santorini, and the birthplace of gods Apollo and Artemis in Delos. Mykonos,
located in the mid-Aegean Sea, is a great stop for viewing whitewashed houses
and windmills along winding streets and breath-taking beaches.
In addition, visitors will have the option of taking an 11-mile hike down Samaria
Gorge. The gorge, the longest in Europe, winds its way through awe-inspiring
grandeur in the heart of the Aghia Roumeli sea.
UW-RF lecturer Pat Hanson will be lead the tour for the second time. Hanson
has worked at the U.S. Embassy in Athens for several years.
UW-RF students can take the Experience Greece Tour for one to three credits
by signing up for English 376 or Art 376. The tour is open to 25 participants
on a first-come, first-serve basis. The estimated cost is $3,900.
Application deadline is March 1, 2005. For more information, contact Hanson
at 715/425-3971 or pat.hanson@uwrf.edu.
