24th Food Microbiology Symposium Set at UW-RF
The 24th annual Food Microbiology Symposium and Workshop will be held at the
University of Wisconsin-River Falls Oct.17-20.
The Food Microbiology Symposium covers current topics in foodborne pathogens
and rapid and automated methods in food microbiology. Speakers from academia,
business and industry, and government regulatory agencies will provide an overview
and update on pathogens, toxins, safety, quality and shelf-life issues.
Speakers include: Mike Osterholm, Center for Infectious Disease Research &
Policy, University of Minneosta; Joseph Meyer from Kraft Foods in Madison; Rod
Nilsestuen, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and
Consumer Protection; Carl Custer from USDA-Food Safety and Inspection Service,
in Washington D.C.; Lisa Szabo from Food Science Australia in Sydney; and Peter
Raspor from University of Ljubljana, in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Other speakers
are scheduled to present as well.
In addition, presentations will also be given by representatives of companies
involved in developing and marketing rapid and automated methods for microbiological
analysis of food, water and the environment. The presentations offer opportunities
to discuss applications and suitability of methods for microbiological analysis
and pathogen detection. A few participating companies are Microbiology International,
BioSys Inc., Strategic Diagnostics Inc., and BD Diagnostic Systems.
The symposium attracts a diverse community of attendees. The program is appropriate
for food scientists, quality assurance supervisors, managers and technicians,
microbiologists involved in food safety, regulatory agency personnel and advisors,
and graduate students interested in food microbiology.
Registrations for the symposium are accepted on a first-come, first-served
basis. The $600 fee includes workshops, conference manual, abstracts of the
presentations, breaks, a banquet on Oct. 19.
