UW-River Falls Announces Wyman Series Schedule
The Wyman Concerts and Lectures Series for the 2003-2004 school year at UW-River
Falls will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 30, with the following lineup of events:
- Whisper in the Noise, Tuesday, Sept. 30, 8 p.m. North Hall Auditorium. This
band is fronted by West Thordson and backed by gorgeous strings, French horn,
moody piano and lush orchestration. The sound falls between a mix of 1980s
moody keyboard pop and modern orchestrated brilliance.
- Scholars of London, Monday, Oct. 13, 8 p.m. Abbott Concert Hall. This vocal
ensemble of four spans five centuries of song, from beloved folk songs to
a work based on Hopi poetry. They have given over 2,500 concerts in more than
50 countries.
- Chief Richard Picciotto, Wednesday, Oct. 29, 7 p.m. Abbott Concert Hall.
The highest-ranking fire chief to survive the terrorist attack on the World
Trade Center and the collapse of the Twin Towers will share his account of
that indelible day. He is the author of "Last Man Down," a tribute to the
343 firefighters and 3,000 civilians who died in the New York City attack.
- Albert DeMeo, Tuesday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m. North Hall Auditorium. The author
of "For the Sins of My Father," the son of New York's most notorious Mafia
killer, discusses what it was like to be raised by a cold-blooded murderer
and devoted family man.
- The Jazzax Saxophone Quartet, Tuesday, Dec. 9, 8 p.m. Abbott Concert Hall.
This quartet specializes in performing music featuring improvisation, creating
spontaneous and engaging live performances. They feature original material
by their members and classic jazz repertoire arranged for four saxophones.
- Bill Porter Orchestra, Wednesday, March 24, 8 p.m. Abbott Concert Hall.
"The Original Big Band Showcase" features the music of the Big Bands of the
30s, 40s, 50s and today. Porter once belonged to Frank Sinatra's orchestra.
- St. Petersburg String Quartet, Wednesday, April 7, 8 p.m. Abbott Concert
Hall. The group was founded as the Leningrad Quartet by Alla Aranovskaya and
Leonid Shukaev, graduates of the Leningrad Conservatory. This season the quartet
is commemorating the 300th anniversary of its namesake city and will feature
music honoring the arts of St. Petersburg.
- Nadine Strossen, Monday, May 3, 7 p.m. North Hall Auditorium. Strossen,
a professor of law at New York Law School, will give a lecture titled "Protecting
Civil Liberties and National Security: How to Strike the Balance."
All performances are open to the public. Series events are free to UW-RF students.
