Kristine Butler, Associate Professor
of French

Kristine Butler, Associate Professor
of French, serves as Chair of the department and advisor to the French
Club. She received her B.A. from Carleton College and her M.A. and Ph.D.
from University of Minnesota. Her primary areas of research are early
French cinema and turn of the century French literature. Her publications
include articles on the films of René Clair, Chantal Akerman, and
Pedro Almodóvar, and on early French serial films. She is currently
developing research in problems of ethnic and cultural identity in early
French cinema, and on a book-length manuscript which discusses the ways
that urbanization and the development of technologies such as the phonograph
changed the way French narrative developed in the late nineteenth century.
