Acquisitions & Collection DevelopmentThis department selects and purchases library material including books, AV materials, curriculum and juvenile materials, electronic databases, etc. They regularly evaluate the collection to make sure that it provides necessary materials to support the fields of study offered at the University. Student staff in this department help with filing orders, checking shipments against invoices, creating lists of materials, and tabulating orders. Archives & Area Research CenterThis unit of the library, located on the lower floor, houses a specialized collection of historical materials related to UWRF as well as the local region of WI including Burnett, Pierce, Polk, and St. Croix Counties. Patrons include University students and faculty engaging in coursework as well as community patrons doing genealogical research. Students in this department provide research assistance to patrons and prepare correspondence research for patrons who are unable to visit the center in person. CatalogingCatalogers are responsible for creating and maintaining the item records that make up the online library catalog. Student staff in this department prepare new library materials for circulation and repair damaged library materials. Circulation/StacksThe Circulation Desk performs the majority of tasks related to distributing library materials and is often the point of first contact for library patrons. Students who work in this department check in/out library materials including Course Reserve items, distribute materials requested through ILL, check out laptops, provide change, provide assistance with photocopiers, and renew and recall library materials. They also put all returned materials in order and re-shelve them. This includes books, microfiche, microfilm, videos, CD’s, records, and government documents and periodicals. They also shelf-read the stacks (make sure items are in call number order), straighten shelves, and perform necessary shifts to make space for new items and to alleviate shelf crowding. Interlibrary LoanWhen a student, faculty or staff member needs books, articles or other library materials that are not owned by the Chalmer Davee Library, the Interlibrary Loan Department (ILL) obtains those materials from other libraries around the state and country. ILL also sends our materials to other libraries that request them. Student staff in this department are responsible for processing library materials for receipt or transport, photocopying journal articles for other libraries, and maintaining records about the materials that are loaned or borrowed. Research assistance is provided in person, over the phone, and electronically. Reference librarians select and maintain the Reference Collection which includes encyclopedias, almanacs, and other “fact books” with the purpose of referencing information for study and research. Reference librarians also teach bibliographic instruction, a.k.a. information literacy, to University classes and other groups to help cultivate quality research skills.
