This publication is designed to help you find materials in the library on the topic of horticulture. If you have any problems locating the resources or using them, please ask a Reference staff member for assistance.

Books

Use the Voyager Online Catalog to locate books in the library. You may search with general subject terms such as gardening, horticulture, plants, vegetable gardening, landscape, etc., or you may choose to conduct precise keyword searches that combine more than one subject. For example, you may conduct an advanced keyword search such as apples AND diseases.

Use the Universal Borrowing function of Voyager to search for and request materials from other University of Wisconsin libraries.

WORLDCAT,a link on the library web page under “Books and...,” allows you to search for and request books and other materials available in libraries worldwide.

Online Databases

These databases provide citations and some abstracts and full-text from scholarly and popular journals. Here's a link to the primary Plant Sciences databases available via SuperSearch. If you need help selecting or searching the databases, try the SuperSearch Tutorial or see a Reference Librarian.

Biological and Agricultural Index Plus
Provides citations from approximately 330 journals in the biological and agricultural sciences.

BIOSIS (Biological Abstracts)
Provides citations and informative abstracts to articles from the world=s literature in biological and related sciences. Includes references to major horticultural journals, but does not include references to trade journals (e.g., American Fruit Grower, Grower Talks)

General Science Full Text
Provides citations and selected full text articles from approximately 300 general science journals. Includes full-text coverage of the journal Horticulture from 1995 to the present.

Agricola
This database provides extensive indexing of agriculture related journals; it also provides access to conference proceedings, books, pamphlets, federal and state documents, and extension publications.

Environmental Sciences and Pollution Management
Includes abstracts and citations from over 4000 scientific journals and
thousands of other sources including conference proceedings, reports, monographs, books and government publications.

Science Citation Index ISI Web of Knowledge
Multidisciplinary database covering journal literature of the sciences. Allows cited reference searches.

Art FullText
Provides citations and abstracts to articles in major art journals that are useful for researching topics related to landscape architecture.

Business Source Elite
Provides citations, abstracts, and selected full-text of articles from important business journals that are useful for research on the business aspects of horticulture.

Business Full Text
Provides citations, abstracts, and selected full-text of articles from important business journals that are useful for research on the business aspects of horticulture.

ABI/Inform Global
Provides citations, abstracts, and selected full-text of articles from important business journals that are useful for research on the business aspects of horticulture.

Reader’s Guide Full Text
Provides citations, abstracts, and selected full-text of articles from popular magazines.

Academic Search Premier
Provides citations, abstracts, and selected full-text of articles from 3000 magazines and journals in all subject areas. In the area of horticulture, primarily covers popular magazines. The Biological and Agricultural Index and Agricola cover horticulture journals more comprehensively.

Interlibrary Loan

If you need an article from a journal that we do not have, we can send for a photocopy of the article through Interlibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loan forms are available on the Library web page. Interlibrary Loan requests for books can also be placed from within WorldCat. Please see the Research Help Desk for more information.

Government Documents

Government Documents are materials that are printed under the authority of governmental agencies. Our library receives a portion of these publications. The Documents collection contain booklets, reports, and books dealing with horticulture. Most of these materials are published by the Department of Agriculture and are housed in the A 17 through A 77 area of the Government Documents stacks. Current documents that the library receives can be identified in the Voyager Online Catalog. To access older titles, use the GPO computerized index on Infostations in the Documents Reference Area

AgDB is a database directory of quality agriculture related databases, datasets, and information systems. It describes and links to more than 1,100 information resources. Informative resource descriptions guide users directly to relevant, quality information resources ranging from "technical" to "practical." AgDB is maintained by the National Agriculture Library.


INFOMINE Scholarly Internet Resource Collections; Biological, Agricultural and Medical Sciences
Provides links to a large number of websites providing scholarly information related to horticulture; includes informative summaries of each site.


State Partners, USDA
Hosts the directory of land grant universities which are state partners of the Cooperative State Research,Education, and Extension Service. Use for easy access to extension services from all 50 states.
