Limiting Your Search by Date

New York Times Historical

Due to the enormous number of newspaper records in this database, along with the fact that it conducts a full-text search, we suggest you limit your search by date. This will help you to retrieve more relevant articles.

1. From the Advanced Search screen, enter relevant search terms.

2. In the "Date Range" area, use one of three options: limit to a single date, to things published before a certain date, or to a range of dates.

Browsing Pages of the Newspaper Using the Page Map/Page Image Feature

Articles are available in full text PDF either as individual articles or as the entire newspaper page.

To view individual article, click on "article image--PDF" (see red arrow).

To view entire newspaper page, click on "page map" (see blue arrow).

An entire newspaper can be browsed cover-to-cover in the "page map" view by using the Previous/Next Page arrows at top of page.

"Article image" view is best for articles that appear on multiple pages, as it allows the entire article to be printed as one file.

Articles and Photographs Not Available in the Database

Due to copyright issues, some of the photographs, graphics, and a small number of articles may not be available via this database. These articles can be printed or viewed using the Page Image view, which can be accessed from the Page Map view (see red arrow).

Another option is to view and/or print the article from our microfilm collection. The New York Times is available in the microfilm cabinets (by the photocopy room) from 1930 to present (NOTE: the library retains a paper copy of current issues until the microfilm arrives). If you need help locating, viewing or printing the microfilm version, please stop by the Research Help Desk.

To email a document:

  1. Click Email link. You will see the email document form.
  2. Enter the email address to which you'd like to send the document, a subject header for the email, and any comments you'd like to include in the body of your email.
  3. Select the format you would like to use for emailing the document, and, if necessary, adjust the email settings.
  4. Click Send Email. You will see a note confirming that your email has been sent.

You will be emailing a PDF file, which may be quite large.
