March 11- April 12 Harriet Barry Gallery, UWRF Chalmer Davee Library Sponsored by UW-River Falls and Women’s History Month. See library hours.
A small exhibition of new works by two local artists will open this weekend in Hammond at the Kremer Loft Gallery in the Hammond Hotel and then move to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in the Harriet Barry Gallery, located in the Chalmer Davee Library.
Patrice Avon Marvin of River Falls is perhaps best known for her painting work which uses highly saturated color, attention to whimsy and stylized female figures. She was also the collaborator with poet Robert Samarotto on The Vegetable Project. Her artistic drives have been fueled by human anonymity and the fragility of life.
Within the last five years Marvin's work has shifted from commercial gallery painting to mixed-media collage that deals with social, political and autobiographical concerns, and makes use of dialectic and narrative qualities, as well as irony and provocative innuendo. Her new work for this exhibition is a small collection entitled "time bombs and other things that have been bugging me," and is presented in a multiple-window storyline format.
Showing with Marvin is Lynn Jermal of Hudson. She teaches in the Art Department at UW-River Falls and has been very involved in producing collaborative and community work in the last five years. Her own studio work is often a way of processing a visual response to personal or cultural events and issues. In this exhibition Jermal created a new series of work, “Witness to the Times” after a conversation with Marvin on how artists can address some of the responses they have about what surrounds them in contemporary culture. The artist sees the work as another way to provoke conversation or ideas about relevant current issues as well as giving her an outlet to respond to the world news related to us daily in the NY Times and other publications. The work is mixed media drawing using collage’ techniques to incorporate found fragments from the newspaper or print sources. Many of Jermal’s works may be open to interpretation, and so hopefully a dialogue will be set up with the viewer’s own response to the words or imagery.
Both artists rely heavily on material from advertising, photography, conversation and printed matter in this exhibition. Issues include: violence; greed; entitlement mentality; environment; aging; patriotism and war.
Events taking place as part of the exhibitions include:
A Reception and Poetry Reading in Hammond on Saturday, March 8th. The reception is from 6-9 Pm and Thomas R. Smith of River Falls and Kevin Caldwell of Hudson will share the “Poems of Love and Protest” at 7 PM.
All events FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

SuperSearch
Beginning October 1, 2007, the UWRF library is rolling out a new and improved search interface called SuperSearch. SuperSearch is a tool with advanced features making researching more efficient and personalized.
With SuperSearch you can:
search multiple types of informational resources simultaneously using a single interface. Instead of using the library catalog to find books, individual journal databases to find articles, and various e-resources and web portals for supplemental research materials, you can search for all of these all at once
Save individual records or lists of entire search results in your own personal e-shelf
Set up and save your own customized Search Sets or use sets already configured for specific disciplines
Beginning Monday, October 1st SuperSearch will replace the Journal Articles link. All resources formerly found through this link will be redirected to SuperSearch.
Masha Hamilton Visit & Camel-Mobile Library Book Drive
In conjunction with a visit to campus by author Masha Hamilton on September 28-29, the UWRF Library is participating in a book drive. Masha Hamilton, author of The Camel Bookmobile, is one of many who are involved in an effort to make reading materials accessible to the impoverished, semi-nomadic people living in northeastern Kenya. Donated books are transported via camel throughout the region and distributed by traveling librarians. Book drives have taken place across the world enabling these mobile libraries to expand into more and more remote areas of Kenya where reading materials are in great demand. Faculty, students, and community members are asked to consider donating books to this incredible effort. A drop box is located on the main floor of the library near the Research Help Desk. For more information on the Camel Bookmobile contact Cate Dodson or visit camelbookdrive.wordpress.com.
Masha Hamilton, award-winning novelist and international journalist, will give a presentation in the Chalmer Davee Library's upper level breezeway at 3:30 pm on Friday, September 28. She will be selling and signing copies of her books and a reception will follow. For more information on Masha Hamilton, visit her website. For more information on her campus visit please contact Dr. Jenny Brantley.

New Printing Procedures
Beginning with the Fall 2007 semester, the library has changed its printing procedures. Patrons will now be required to bring their own paper for printouts at all public printers, just as all IT computer labs require. Recycled paper (with one side filled) will be supplied for patrons who simply wish to print an article citation or other item and do not require new, blank paper. Library patrons also have the option of sending print jobs to KinniCopies in the University Center (UC). To do so, choose the KinniCopies printer from the file > print menu from any computer in the library. Fill out an online order form. You will then be able to pay for and pick up the print job at KinniCopies, located near the Information Desk on the main level of the UC.

New York Times Historic
The Chalmer Davee Library has acquired access to a resource known as the New York Times Historic. Differential tuition funds paid for this unique acquisition.
The New York Times Historic is a large-scale, ongoing digitization project that involved converting more than 3,400,000 pages from microfilm into computer files. The New York Times Historic database covers every issue, cover to cover, from the very first issue in 1851 through 2004—a span not presently covered by any existing electronic resource. The library will continue to add content each year.
Using ProQuest Newspapers database you can narrow your NYT Historic search to front page stories, photos, editorials, weather, stock quotes, obituaries, advertisements, legal notices, and even lottery numbers. You can also use a date-range search tool to search only a specific day, before a certain date, or to search a range of issues between 2 dates. Items in the database can be viewed as individual “clippings” or as a downloadable PDF full page images that can be flipped through page by page.
Click here to see a research guide for this database.
Once again a sincere thanks goes to the students and administration who, in passing the undergraduate differential tuition initiative, recognize the integral role of the Chalmer Davee Library in helping our students learn.

New & Improved Way to Search for New Titles
The library has recently added a new search feature to the online catalog. Now, along with the Simple Search, Advanced Search, and Course Reserves tabs, you’ll see a “New Books” tab. This tab allows you to see all new items the library has received over the past four weeks. Searches can be limited by location (Reference Stacks, Curriculum Materials Collection, Government Documents, AV Room, etc.) and by time span (up to 4 weeks). You can sort the results by call number, title, or author. There is also an optional search that will let you look for terms in the title and author fields.
