These are recommended software and settings for using the Chalmer Davee Library databases through our proxy server.

Recommended Configurations:

Browsers

We strongly recommend using Version 4.0 or higher of either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator because our site works best with these browsers. Keep in mind that the newer browsers not only have newer features, they often fix browser vendor bugs, especially those dealing with Internet security.

Java

Enable Java for Netscape

2. Click Preferences.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Click the Enable Java box.

Firewalls

Firewalls can cause problems either completing the authentication process through our proxy server, or connecting to the databases. If you have connection problems, disconnect your firewall to see if that helps.

Because our proxy server assigns a different port to each resource on a sort of random basis, opening a certain port can be tricky. Start by allowing port 2048 - that should allow you to authenticate.

After authenticating through the proxy server, you may have further problems. Your logs will tell you which port the server tried to assign to the resource, so you can try to and open that one up. More information is available at http://www.usefulutilities.com

Windows XP has a built-in firewall. If you believe that this may be causing connection problems, follow these steps to disable your firewall:
Click Start, Control Panel, double–click Network Connections Select the Internet connection, Network Tasks, Change settings of this connection, Advanced tab, Internet Connection Firewall, uncheck or check the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check box.

NetZero

The NetZero HiSpeed service works with proxy by hostname using port 80, but it does not work with proxy by port and may not work with proxy by hostname using ports other than 80.

In most instances, an icon has appeared in the system tray in the lower-right corner of the screen which contains an option to disable HiSpeed. Using this option enables service for most users.

There have been reports of users for whom this did not work. For those users, the following instructions have provided a work-around:

Launch Internet Explorer
Go to Tools | Internet Options...
Click on the Connections tab
Scroll through the Dial-up settings to locate NetZero, then click on NetZero and click Settings...
Under Proxy Server, click Advanced...
In Exceptions, scroll to the end of the list, then type a semi-colon (;) followed by just the host name of the EZproxy server (www.uwrf.edu:2048). All the other sample entries have an asterisk (*) in front, and although it won't hurt, that isn't required for this entry. Do not include the port number.
Keep hitting OK until all the windows close and you are back in Internet Explorer. At this point, access to EZproxy should be restored.

Google Web Accelerator

Google Web Accelerator may cause the databases to stop working for on campus users. If this happens, turn Google Accelerator off while accessing the databases.
