Types of Materials on Reserve
- Materials in all formats may be purchased specifically for the Reserve Collection. See the Policy Regarding Acquisition of Reserve Material.
- Materials in the Chalmer Davee Library circulating collection may be placed on reserve if requested by a faculty/academic staff member to support a class assignment. Library materials may remain on reserve for up to one academic year. Materials that need to be on reserve for a longer time period will be purchased for extended reserve using reserve funds.
- Photocopies of books and articles will be accepted for reserve. In accepting photocopies for reserve the library assumes that the copy or copies have been made in compliance with the fair use provision (section 107) of the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code). The Reserve Department does not monitor the use of photocopies. It is the faculty/academic staff member's responsibility to determine whether the use made of a work in any particular case is fair use and in compliance with the Copyright Law.
- Personal copies of a variety of materials (exams, quizzes, sample research papers, books, articles, reports, papers, pamphlets, etc.) may be placed on reserve. The library assumes no responsibility for theft or mutilation of personal copies of materials that faculty/academic staff place on reserve.
- Non-course related materials will be placed on reserve for the convenience of the campus community. For example, UW System budget books, student evaluations of faculty, and administrative reports are all acceptable items for reserve.
- Library equipment such as head phones, portable cassette/CD players, record player needles, and calculators may be placed on reserve.
Check Out Policy
- The Reserve Desk has five loan periods:
- 2 Hours Restricted to Library--the item may not leave the library
- 2 Hours and Overnight--the item may leave the library and is due two hours after check out. The item may be checked out for overnight two hours before closing time and is due one hour after opening the next day of library operation.
- 24 Hour--the item may be checked out at any time during the day and is due at closing time the following day of library operation.
- 3 Day--the item may be checked out at any time during the day and is due at closing time three days later (i.e., an item checked out on Monday would be due at closing time Thursday).
- 7 Day—the item may be check out any time during the day and is due at closing time seven days later (i.e., an item checked out on Monday will be due at closing time the following Monday).
- The Reserve Assistant determines the loan period for materials obtained from the circulating collection and purchased with Reserve funds. The faculty/academic staff member determines the loan period for their personal copies placed on reserve.
- A current University I.D. card is required by faculty, staff, and students to check out reserve materials.
- Community patrons may not check out materials that are on reserve to support courses. They may use non-course related reserve materials by leaving a form of I.D. such as a driver's license.
Fines
Fines are charged for lost items. The lost item cost is $40.00 plus a $20.00 processing fee.
Electronic Reserve
- All use of materials placed on electronic reserve will be at the initiative of faculty solely for the non-commercial, educational usage of students enrolled in their courses.
- Materials on electronic reserve will be accessible only by faculty name, course name, and course number through the library’s online catalog.
- Longer works, such as complete books, will not be copied for electronic reserve service.
- Copyright notice will appear on copies made of reserve readings to indicate that materials may be covered by copyright law.
- Electronic files will be removed from access on the system at the conclusion of the course.
Reserve Processing
- Items are processed for reserve on a first come first served basis. The processing time depends on the time of semester the items are submitted.
- The Cataloging Department provides full MARC cataloging for all materials purchased with reserve funds for extended reserve. The Reserve Assistant provides brief records for all other material on reserve (i.e., all copies in folders, personal copies from faculty, electronic files, etc.). Brief records contain the author and title of each item. All items, except those on electronic reserve, are searchable in the online catalog by author or title.
- Materials from the circulating collection may be placed on reserve for a semester or an academic year. At the end of each semester, reserve materials are evaluated in consultation with the faculty/academic staff member who placed the items on reserve. Items removed from reserve are returned to their place of origin.
- Every two years, extended reserve items are reviewed by the Reserve Assistant and the faculty/academic staff member who requested the item for possible removal from reserve.
