The Chalmer Davee Library provides an environment that is comfortable, inviting, and conducive to study. To accommodate the preferences of
a wide variety of users while providing a wide range of services, the library adheres to the following noise policy:
- In the Reference and Circulation/Reserve Desk areas, normal conversational noise levels are permitted for reference and library service
purposes. Computers, printers, and other equipment in these areas will produce a certain level of expected noise.
- While in the library, users must set their cell phones to a non-audible signal. Individuals wishing to speak on a cell phone should take
their conversation to the lobby area or to the main floor hallway near the campus phone and should converse in a low voice.
- Headphones may be used if the noise is not audible to others.
- Sound features of laptop computers must be turned off.
- Interactive groups of two or more should attempt to use one of the seven group study rooms in the library (three are on the main floor in
the AV area, and four are on the upper floor.) If a group study room is unavailable, groups are asked to use a table on the main floor and
converse in a low voice.
- The study areas on the upper floor of the library are considered quiet study areas. Conversations must be kept to a minimum and conducted
in a whisper.
- When public events are scheduled in the Breezeway on the upper level, staff will post signs in advance of the event alerting users that
noise will be created in this area.
Enforcement of policy:
- Users may report violations of this policy to staff at a public service desk, who will follow-up to address the reported problem.
- All public service staff are empowered with the responsibility to approach disruptive individuals or groups and ask them to discontinue the
disruptive behavior or to move to an appropriate area of the library.
- Users who fail to comply with this policy may be asked to leave the building.
