Introduction

Universal Borrowing UWRF students, faculty, and staff are now able to borrow materials directly from other UW System campus libraries.

  • Materials may be picked up and returned to any UW library.
  • Most materials eligible for universal borrowing are checked out for 28 days and may be renewed once.
  • Media and some curriculum materials will circulate for 14 days and may not be renewed.

Selecting Other Catalogs

From the library web page, follow the " Books" link and enter the Voyager online catalog (click on Simple Search). Click on OTHER UW CATALOGS "UNIVERSAL BORROWING". You may simultaneously search multiple catalogs by highlighting ALL UNIVERSAL BORROWING LIBRARIES or you may choose to select individual libraries from the list.

Selecting Items

When connected to the UW catalog(s) you've selected, choose any of the available search options to identify the item you wish to borrow.

Requesting Items

From the displayed list of records, click on the item you wish to borrow to view more information about the item. Check the STATUS of the item. The status must be AVAILABLE or NOT CHARGED or DISCHARGED. If any other status is listed, the item may not be requested through universal borrowing.

Submitting the Request

  • Click on PLACE REQUEST button
  • Log in with your university ID number and last name.
  • Click OK for UB request.
  • Enter your University ID number on the form.
  • Designate a pickup library. Home library default (UW-RF) is supplied. Click on the arrow to see other options. You may arrange to order material from one library to be delivered to a library other than UW-River Falls.
  • After completing the request form, click submit.
  • NOTE: If your title has more than one volume, you will need to complete a separate request for each volume. Indicate in the COMMENT box which volume you are requesting.

Status of Request

While waiting for your materials, you should check the status of your request(s) by consulting your patron information on the Library catalog. Click on the "My Library Account" button and log in with your university ID number and last name. If an item cannot be supplied by the lending library, this is where you will receive that notice. Other notice of non-availability will not be provided. If not supplied you may start another UB request to other owning UB libraries. If not owned by any other UB library, please submit an Interlibrary Loan request.

Picking up Material

When your requested material is available to be picked up, you will receive a notice via an email sent to your campus email address. Be prompt in picking up items, as they are retained only 7 DAYS at the library's Circulation Desk.

Returning UB Material

You may return the materials you borrowed to any UW library on or before the due date specified.
  • NOTE: Bills for non-returned or lost items will be sent to you from the lending library and will be based on the lending library's policies.

Additional Methods of Obtaining Materials from Other Libraries

To order materials not available through universal borrowing, including articles from magazines and journals, fill out an interlibrary loan request form at https://216.54.57.189/illiad/WRF/logon.html.

You may search WorldCat to locate books available in libraries worldwide. WorldCat offers an online interlibrary loan request form. Find this resource at http://www.uwrf.edu/library/research/.

Please contact a Reference Librarian at refdesk@uwrf.edu or 715-425-3343 with questions about universal borrowing or interlibrary loan.
