Chancellor's Office General Correspondence, 1911-1969 Arrangement: Chronological Quantity: 9 archives boxes Collection Summary: This series contains correspondence from the presidencies/chancellorships of James W. Crabtree (1911-1917); Jesse H. Ames (1911, 1917-1946); Eugene H. Kleinpell (1946-1967); Richard J. Delorit (1967-1968), and George R. Field (1968- ). Most early correspondence
(1911-1930) concerns prospective students (applications, inquiries concerning
boarding and employment), students, and graduates (recommendations).
A number of job applications are also included. Correspondence with
men in the military , including a list of River Falls Normal men in
the service, dominates the files from 1917-1921. Other items in the
series include materials relating to the Smith-Hughes Act and problems
at the River Falls Normal School resulting from its passage (1917-1929);
correspondence concerning the Basil Stanley affair (1927-1931); correspondence
concerning legislation, curriculum change, and salary schedules. After
1930 most of the correspondence is of a formal business nature. Highlights
in this portion of the series include correspondence concerning the
University Foundation (1948- ); arrangements for guest lecturers; the
development of the Graduate School; and transitions from Teachers College
to State College (1951) and from State College to State University (1964).
