Photography Contest

ENTRY DEADLINE: 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Bring entries to the Journalism Department, 310 North Hall.

 

JUDGING SESSION: 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 in 320 North Hall

The judging session is open to the public.

 

EXHIBITION: Saturday, April 19 - Thursday, May 1, Harriet Barry Gallery, Davee Library

2008 CONTEST RULES

1. Photographs must be prints (slides are not eligible). The prints may be black and white or color and must be enlarged to 5x7 or larger. Photographs taken with film or digital cameras are accepted.

2. All photographs must be mounted on photo mount board (not poster board) with window matting and without frames. Entries without a firm backing and without window matting will not be accepted. Window matting is a separate piece from the backing. The backing must be photo board or foam core. Check with the Journalism department for samples. See photo stores and art supply stores for information and supplies for mounting the photos.

3. The winning photos will be published on the Journalism Web site. Therefore, all entries must be digitized and e-mailed to the coordinator before the deadline. See green box below for tips on emailing JPGs.

4. Maximum number of entries per student is 10.

5. No personal identification is allowed on the front of the photograph.

6. A completed ENTRY FORM must be attached to the back of each entry. Entry forms MUST BE TYPED and SIGNED.

7. Each entry must have its own title, even if it is called "Untitled No. 1" and "Untitled No. 2".

8. Entries not following contest rules will be disqualified.

9. Winning photographs (prints only, not negatives or slides) become the property of the Journalism Department. Honorable Mentions remain the property of the entrant.

10. A jury of three photographers will judge the entries for first, second, and third places in each category, and select photographs from the remaining entries for exhibition at Harriet Barry Gallery in Davee Library. Decisions of the judges are final.

DIVISIONS

Color photographs have five subject categories:

FEATURE: Emphasis is on public events and places such as urban scenes, travel photos, sports, fairs, festivals.

PERSONALITY: Emphasis is on capturing expressions, moods, personality of a person.

LANDSCAPE: Emphasis is on nature, plants.

ANIMALS: Emphasis is on animals, either wild or tame.

OBJECTS: Emphasis is on human-made objects such as architecture, machinery, still life, vehicles.

Black & White Photographs:

One category accepts all photos taken with black and white film. If there are numerous entries and a variety of entrants, the judges reserve the right to create additional categories at the judging session.

Digitally Manipulated Photographs:

This division is for any photograph that has been digitally altered, regardless of the original format. Digital manipulation means changing the colors or subject matter. Cropping or simple brightness changes, by themselves, are not regarded as digital manipulation in this contest. Digital pictures that have been cropped or have been brightened or darkened slightly should be entered in the other divisions. If there are numerous entries, judges reserve the right to create additional categories at the judging session.

 

Emailing JPGs

Keep the file size below 1 megabyte.

Set the width of the picture between 4-6 inches wide.

Set the resolution between 72-90 pixels per inch.

Mail no more than 2 per e-mail.
