

UW-River Falls journalism alumni use their communication expertise in an amazing array of work experiences spanning the globe. Many have received state and national recognition in their chosen specialties. Two have been honored as UW-River Falls Distinguished Alumni, a university-wide award for outstanding service to one's profession and respective communities:
Wong How Man, who graduated in 1976, was named the 2002 Distinguished Alumnus. For more than 20 years, Wong has used his writing and photographs to inform the world about remote areas in China. In 1986, he founded the China Exploration and Research Society, dedicated to exploration, research, nature and cultural conservation, and education through popular media.
Sigurd Hanson, who graduated in 1975, was named the 2004 Distinguished Alumnus. Hanson has worked with humanitarian agencies in Africa and Asia for nearly 30 years. First-person accounts of his experiences in Afghanistan were published on Time magazine's website in 2001 in a series entitled "Peshawar Diary." Currently, Hanson is director of Vision World in Pakistan.
