Advising Policy

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT with your adviser by signing up on your adviser's sign-up sheet posted near his or her office door.

PLEASE DO NOT CALL to make an appointment; the department associate, student assistants and other faculty who may answer the phone will not schedule appointments on behalf of your adviser.

KEEP REGISTRATION MATERIALS IN ONE FOLDER to use throughout your college career, including:

  • Degree Progress Report (DPR, formerly DAR Degree Audit Report)
  • 4-year plan
  • Registration procedures & dates

PLAN AHEAD with your JOURNALISM PRODUCTION COURSES. Majors must take two of the following production courses:

  • 121 Radio News Production
  • 122 TV News Photography
  • 123 Editing for Print Media
  • 124 Editing for Online Media

These courses prepare you for the two required Practicum courses (JOUR 304) where you will report for the student news media of your choice: Student Voice, WRFW News, or NewsCenterU. You may choose to work in the same media for both Practicums, or you may choose to gain experience in two different ones. For example, you could take one Practicum at WRFW News and another at the Student Voice. Or, you could take both Practicums at WRFW News.

Whichever news media you choose for your Practicums, you will need to have taken the corresponding production course(s) in advance:

  • Practicum at Student Voice: prerequisite is JOUR 123 Editing for Print Media
  • Practicum at WRFW News: prerequisite is JOUR 121 Radio News Production
  • Practicum at NewsCenterU: prerequisite is JOUR 122 TV News Photography
  • JOUR 124 Editing for Online Media prepares students to report for a news Web site.
A practicum for this converged style of reporting will be established next year.

Before your appointment

  • Get two copies of your DPR (Degree Progress Report) on eSIS - one for you and one for your adviser. IMPORTANT: You will have to reschedule your appointment if you don't bring your DPR.
  • Highlight all the categories with MINUS SIGNS
  • Create a tentative plan for the next two, three or more semesters
  • Check the catalog online for any course prerequisites
  • Create a class schedule for next semester by checking the online class schedule and taking special note of the number of remaining seats
  • Select alternative courses for those courses with fewer than 10 remaining seats
  • Write down questions for your adviser

Bring to your appointment

  • Both copies of your DPR (Degree Progress Report, formerly DAR Degree Audit Report)
  • Your plan of action for at least the next two or more semesters (list of courses with prerequisites)
  • Your class schedule plan for next semester (courses, days and times)
  • Your questions/complaints/concerns

After your appointment

  • Check the online class schedule often, especially the day before you register to make sure the classes you want are still open
  • Check back with your adviser if you incur any problems registering
