The University of Wisconsin – River Falls invites applications and nominations for the Dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. The Dean is the senior officer of the College, which includes the Departments of Teacher Education, Social Work, Communicative Disorders, Counseling and School Psychology, Health and Human Performance. This is a full time twelve-month appointment reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Dean will provide the vision and possess the skills necessary to meet the challenges of the 21st century through leadership, planning, coordination, and supervision in matters related to all personnel, programs, and services of a multi-discipline College and will advise the Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs on these matters. The Dean will be a knowledgeable leader on issues and trends in education at the local, state, national, and international levels. He/she is responsible for building relationships with external agencies, K-12 schools, University of Wisconsin System universities and colleges, alumni, and funding sources, and will be expected to assume a major role in fund development efforts for the College. The Dean monitors teacher certification requirements, acts as certification officer for K-12 teacher education programs, and coordinates the maintenance of on-going assessment and accreditation requirements for the College.

Qualifications (Required):

  • Earned doctorate from an accredited institution;
  • Faculty credentials eligible for an appointment as a tenured full professor in one of the College's departments;
  • Experience as a faculty member and demonstrated progression through professional faculty ranks;
  • Evidence of significant contributions/performance in teaching and scholarly activity in higher education;
  • Evidence of significant professional experience in one of the disciplines represented in the College;
  • Familiarity with, and ability to advocate for, all disciplines represented in the College;
  • A proven record of administrative competence demonstrated through a minimum of 3 years prior experience as a dean, director, academic department chair, or other comparable administrative position;
  • Demonstrated visionary leadership in higher education;
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in the assessment of academic programs in the fields represented in the college;
  • Demonstrated experience and success with external accreditations of professional education programs (e.g. ASHA, CSWE, NCATE, NASP, etc.);
  • A record of successful fiscal management;
  • An understanding of and commitment to shared governance.

In addition the Dean is expected to possess the following skills, abilities and attributes:

  • Technological competence in the utilization of appropriate data bases and other computer technology as well as an understanding of and vision for the impact technology has and will have on education;
  • Ability to articulate and facilitate a long term vision for the College within the context of the University's mission, vision, and values;
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with professional colleagues, students, and staff in the College and with deans, faculty, and staff in the other colleges and affiliated entities of the University;
  • Ability to assess and extend community engagement activities of the College in western Wisconsin and the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area;
  • Ability to nurture an environment that values excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service;
  • Commitment to cultural diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunity;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies through a variety of means.
  • Familiarity with fund development activities and the ability to work with appropriate entities on campus in planning and facilitating such efforts.
