Exercise and Sport Science Practicum(s)P ED 271 and P ED 471Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the practicum? The practicum is a field experience. The student must complete two practicums. EXSS- 271 Practicum I is an introductory experience of 1 credit requiring 50 hours of field experience. EXSS-471 Practicum II is a minimum of 4 credits reuiring 200 hours of field experience. Both practicums have academice requirements along with the field experience hours. What are some possilbe placements for the practicum? Many students find a placement to complete the practicum within the River Falls and Twin Cities area. As long as the practicum site is approved by Dr. Deb Allyn, you can complete the practicum anywhere within the United States or internationally. Some students complete the practicum on campus working for athletics in Athletic Training and in the Strength and Conditioning Center. When do I enroll for the practicum? Practicum I - You may enroll in Practicum I after successfully completing P ED 161. Practicum II - You should enroll for Practicum II during the final year of your academic program. How do I enroll? Both courses are "closed" courses, which means in order to view the course on eSis you must "uncheck" open classes only. 1. You need to find a placement and then complete the application process. This process includes: a) completing the application form that is available online, or in printed form in the file area across from the H & HP office; and b) writing your expectations and objectives for the practium. 2. Once you have the paperwork completed you must attend the mandatory meeting. You will receive an email for the date, time and location of the meeting. 3. At the mandatory meeting you will receive a PIN to register for the course. 4. For Practicum II the default number of credits is 1. You need to change this number to the number of crecits you intend to enroll in. How many credits do I need to complete for EXSS 471-Practicum II? You must complete 4 credits (200 hours) to meet the graduation requirement. These credits can be split and taken in two different semesters if you wish. You may enroll for up to 12 credits. Why would I enroll and complete more than the required 4 credits? If you complete the internship in an area where you are working more than 200 hours and the additional credits would be beneficial for further education (i.e., Athletic Training) or enhancing your chance for employment you may want to register for more than 4 credits.
