Searching for Funding Sources

Searching for funding sources is usually the first step in obtaining external funding for a programmatic or research idea. There are thousands of potential sources; searching for the right one is an art. We can search for you, if you like. Call, drop in, or write us a note listing your interests as completely as you can. Or you can use the resources listed below to search for funding sources yourself.

  • Library of grant resource documents, housed in the Grants Office--the Guide to Federal Funding for Education; The Foundation Directory; the National Directory of Corporate Giving; guides to foundations in Wisconsin and Minnesota; and various specialty publications. We subscribe electronically to the Federal Register, the daily publication most federal agencies use to announce their grant-funded programs, and to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance, or CFDA, which lists every grant program funded by the federal government. Click on either one to search their pages for grant programs.
  • Newsletters-- Grant News, published monthly by the UW-RF Grants Office in paper and electronically. Grantscape (from Capitol Publications, which publishes Federal Grants and Contracts Weekly, one of our prime sources of grants announcements) runs www.grantscape.com, with funder of the day, searchable archive, links to other sites, grantseeking tips, etc
  • Electronic database--the Sponsored Programs Information Network, or SPIN. (Click on the HELP button to learn how to define your search by setting the various SPIN search criteria.) SPIN also operates GENIUS, a service which will email you grant opportunities daily according to the profile you create. Click on Create a New Profile and follow the directions.
  • Federal Grant Opportunities--Grants.gov is the site for all federal grants activity. You can search for grant sources from federal agencies, register for email notifications of grant announcements in your fields of interest, submit proposals, draw down grant funds, or file annual reports through this site. Fedgrants, another federally-sponsored site, is a compilation of grant opportunities from most federal agencies. They will also email you grant announcements from the Federal Register and Commerce Business Daily which match your specific research/program interests.
  • Other electronic resources--Most federal agencies now have Web sites where they include grant announcements and application guidelines. You can search the Federal Register and the Commerce Business Daily, which advertises federal contracts and cooperative agreements. Many of the larger foundations and corporations make grant information available electronically as well.
