Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer-based systems designed for the capture, management, manipulation, storage, analysis, and display of spatially referenced data. These systems are used to support decision making for planning and management problems. GIS allow a user to explore a wide variety of interactions between people, animals, plants, climate, resources, and other geographically based data in order to manage and understand better the world in which we live.

Facilities
A fully networked laboratory houses the cartography and GIS hardware and software at UW-River Falls. This facility is fully integrated into the geography curriculum and features powerful computer hardware and software. The Department of Geography and Mapping Sciences maintains the GIS lab under the direction of Dr. Charles Rader and Dr. Mathew Dooley . The day to day operations are managed by Ian Muehlenhaus.
The department participates in the UW-System ESRI software site-license. Please contact Charles Rader for more information on the use of this software..
