Welcome to the Faculty and Academic Staff Development Program

FACULTY RESEARCH GRANTS

GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES
  1. No grant shall exceed a total of $1,500. Proposals that exceed $1,500 will not be considered. Any size grant up to $1,500 is welcome. Should the entire project cost in excess of $1,500, the proposal must clearly indicate which portion of the project the grant will support.
  2. Proposal requests may include funds to cover supplies and equipment connected to the project, conference travel, production/publications costs, graduate/undergraduate student assistance funds, and faculty salaries. (Note: in the past, proposals which ask mainly for faculty salaries have not fared well.)
  3. Any proposed research or grant project that involves human or animal subjects must be reviewed and certified by either the "Human Subjects Review Board" or the "Animal Care Committee" prior to the collection of data.
  4. A faculty member may submit only one proposal for consideration in any year.
  5. Faculty receiving a Faculty Research Grant must present the results of their projects, either through a poster displayed during UW-RF's Research and Scholarly Activity Day or a final report submitted to the Provost & Vice Chancellor. The poster or report must be presented during the academic year following the grant year. Faculty receiving research grants must submit either a poster or a final report in order to be considered for future faculty research grants.
  6. Proposals that fall into a category of funding for which other resources are readily available (e.g., undergraduate teaching improvement or lab modernization) will not be given funding priority.
  7. Proposals are welcome from all colleges and disciplines covering any area of research or professional endeavor, including research about teaching or pedagogical methods.
  8. Proposals to cover research costs associated with completion of an advanced or terminal degree will not be considered. Members of the Research Committee of the FASDB will evaluate each proposal submitted according to the following criteria:
APPLICATION PROCESS

Bill Campbell, Director of Grants & Research, will be happy to consult with you about your proposal as you are writing it, including brainstorming ideas, reviewing drafts, and helping with budgets.  Call (ext. 3195) or email (wm.e.campbell@uwrf.edu) for assistance.

Submit one copy of the cover page and page 1 and seven copies of the abstract, narrative, and budget to the Office of Faculty and Academic Development, 104 North Hall. The narrative portion must not exceed 10 double-spaced pages, with a minimum of 10 pt. type. (Note: committee members will not read past page 10 of the narrative.) Please remember that your audience consists of your colleagues from other departments; they may not understand the jargon of your field. Consequently you should write as if you are addressing educated laypersons from a field other than your own.

The application form is available here as a "fill in" MS Word form. You must use this form to apply for funds. Download the form, fill in the gray boxes with the relevant information, print the form and submit seven copies of your application to the Director of Faculty and Student Academic Support Programs, 104 North Hall.

RATING SCHEME AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR REVIEWERS

Scoring Scale

1. Poor (not fundable and unacceptable)
2. Fair (potentially sound idea with need for revisions)
3. Good (fundable, with need for minor revisions)
4. Excellent (fundable as it stands)

Scoring Criteria

Reviewers should use the ranking scale for all four of these criteria:

A. Clarity with which the research objectives and goals, methodology, procedures, and steps in the research process are presented in the proposal.

B. Significance of the proposed research to academic discipline(s) of the author(s). To what extent does the research extend knowledge, answer existing questions, or address a particular need in the area of study.

C. Budget Appropriateness. Does the proposed budget fit within established guidelines? Is the proposed budget clearly linked to the research goals and tasks outlined?

D. Overall Quality.

Instructions

1. Each reviewer determines a total score for each proposal based upon the four criteria.

2. Each reviewer submits a completed scoring form to the chair of the Research Committee.

3. Those proposals receiving the highest average scores are given funding priority.
