UW-RIVER FALLS FOUNDATION

ROBERT P. KNOWLES ENDOWMENT IN INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

Purpose: An endowment has been established in memory of Robert P. Knowles, graduated in 1938 from UW-River Falls, received the Distinguished Alumnus award, and served on the Board of Regents from 1980 until his death in 1985.

Robert Knowles believed that cross-cultural exchange, making new friends and understanding different cultures, is one of the strongest elements in preserving and promoting world peace. It is fitting, therefore, that his contribution to education not only in Wisconsin, but throughout the world, should be honored by a program to support students and faculty who desire to learn more about the world.

The proceeds from the Knowles Endowment will be used to encourage international exchanges among both students and faculty.

Student Exchanges Endowment funds will be used to provide scholarships for students at UWRF to study abroad. Students who desire an international experience are often deterred by lack of funds. Partial and full scholarships for study abroad will be made available to academically deserving students. Funds in this category may also be used to assist foreign students who are burdened with extraordinary and unexpected expenses.

Faculty Exchanges Grants will be made to UW-RF faculty for short-term research and teaching abroad; to supplement longer international study; or to attend internationally related conferences. Funds may also be used to defray the expenses of visiting international scholars.

Guidelines:

1. In order to assist as many faculty and students as possible, grants will be made in the $500 range, depending on the availability of funds, and the number of applicants.

2. Grant applications will be solicited during the spring semester and reviewed by the Faculty Professional Development Committee of the Faculty and Academic Staff Development Board.
