Welcome to the Faculty and Academic Staff Development Program

UWRF Collaborative RSCA (Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity) Grants

C-RSCA (for Collaborative Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity) grants are designed to support collaborative student-faculty RSCA projects. We learn best by doing, goes the old saw, and every teacher knows that students learn best when they are actively engaged. One of the most powerful ways to engage students is to involve them in projects where they can apply the analytical and creative tools they have learned in their courses to a genuine problem, design a way to answer it, and defend the answer they reach before their peers and faculty.

Therefore, the UWRF Faculty/Academic Staff Development Board sponsor the Collaborative RSCA grants. This program supports faculty-student teams performing research through grants of up to $1,200 (up to $800 stipends for the student researcher, up to $400 for supplies, expenses, and travel).

In this context, research means all sorts of scholarly activity, including laboratory research, qualitative research, and creative projects. That is, student faculty-teams in theatre, agricultural economics, elementary education, and English are as eligible for awards as those in chemistry, horticulture, and physics.

Criteria for Ranking Proposals
  1. To what degree is this project worthwhile, i.e. does it have the potential to contribute to research and scholarship in the field?
  2. To what degree will this project contribute to the student's education and career?
  3. To what degree will this project contribute to the faculty collaborator's research/scholarly activity?
  4. To what degree is the proposal coherent? Is the budget reasonable?

The application form is available here as a "fill in" MS Word form. You must use this form to apply for funds. Download the form, fill in the gray boxes with the relevant information, print the form and submit seven copies of your application to the Director of Faculty and Student Academic Support Programs, 104 North Hall.

In addition to the cover sheet, a narrative must be included with the application. The narrative must address the following points and be limited to six or fewer, single-spaced pages (at least12 point type). In the narrative, please follow this outline:

1. Background. In this section, provide appropriate background material, e.g. the reasons why this project is important or the theoretical framework which underlies it.

2. The problem. What is the problem your project will solve or illuminate? What is the creative task your project will address?

3. The solution. How will you solve the problem you described in section 2? Or, how will you address that creative task? When will you start, when will you conclude your project, how will you proceed?

4. Dissemination plan. How will you let other researchers or scholars know your results? Through what publications? Through presentations to which audiences, in what settings?

5. Contributions to student and faculty. How will this project contribute to the student researcher's education and subsequent career? How will it contribute to the faculty collaborator's research/scholarly activity?

6. Budget detail. How, specifically, will you disburse your funds? If you have another source of funds, please include it in your budget. Use these categories:

Student stipend/salary. (Tell us how many hours you will spend on this project. The standard C-RSCA rate of pay is $7/hr. Remember that the maximum total stipend/salary is $800.)

Supplies and expenses. (Detail your expenses for laboratory supplies, materials, travelincluding travel to conferences where you will present your work, and any other expenses you might incur. Note: all expenditures must be in accord with UW policies and procedures.)

Matching funds. (List the amounts and sources of any funds you will use for this project, e.g. College-Work Study, supplies contributed by your department, or your own funds to support additional travel.) Note: matching funds are not required.

If you have questions about this application form or about the C-RSCA program, please call or email Bill Campbell (ext. 3195; wm.e.campbell@uwrf.edu).
