Larry is an Extension Animal Health Specialist with particular interest
in dairy cattle. His focus is on preventing disease and managing conditions
that influence the productivity and profitability of dairy herds.
- Larry is collaborating with
Perry Clark (UW-River Falls), Bruce Jones and Ric Grummer (both of UW-Madison)
on a research study to investigate the effect of two consecutive shortened
dry periods on milk yield and other profit-related parameters. This study
is funded by the University of Wisconsin Consortium for Extension and Research
in Agriculture and Natural Resources (CERANR).
- Larry serves as Secretary-Treasurer
of the Northwstern Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (NWVMA), providing
continuing education opportunities to members. Recent continuing education
sessions have focused on ophthalmology, Clostridial diseases, West Nile
Virus, dermatology and biosecurity.
- Larry is continuing to work
on a research study with Steve Kelm (UW-River Falls) and Mike Collins (UW-Madison)
to compare different sampling methods for better detection of Mycobacterium
paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) from infected cattle.
- Larry is finishing work on a
previous CERANR grant to compare the prevalence of Johne's disease in breeds
of dairy cattle. On this project Larry has been collaborating with Steve
Kelm (UW-River Falls) and Mike Collins (UW-Madison).
- Larry is on the planning committee
for the Midwest Dairy Herd Health Conference held annually in November and
coordinated through the UWEX Dairy Team.
- Larry is a member of the UWEX
Animal Identification Committee working with the Wisconsin Livestock Identification
Consortium (WLIC) to provide information to producers on animal identification.
- Larry continues to serve as
UWEX liaison with the USDA, APHIS, and WI DATCP on biosecurity and homeland
security issues
- Larry continues to work with
WI DATCP on Johne's disease control and educational efforts in Wisconsin.
