Wings access rights

What is Wings?

Wings is a Windows file server share available for department, on-campus use. Some file types or functions are incompatibile with FalconFile. For situations like these, a department folder can be created on Wings:

  • Databases requiring multiple simultaneous updates. For example, within a database, different records need to be updated by different people at the same time.
  • Other special departmental uses

Wings appears as the O: drive on Windows computers. Wings works like a traditional file system and cannot be accessed from off campus. Most departments that use Wings have the majority of their files on FalconFile and a small portion of their files on Wings. If you believe your department has a need for a folder on Wings, please contact the DoTS HelpDesk for assistance (helpdesk@uwrf.edu or 715-425-4357 (HELP).

Managing Wings Permissions

Open Windows Explorer (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer) and under ‘My Computer’, navigate to falcon on ‘wings’ (O:)

Windows Explorer

Right click on the departmental folder for which you are administrator and select Properties and then the Security tab. It may take a moment for the window to refresh with all group or user names.

Security

Notice that when you select one Group or user name from the top section, the bottom section indicates which permissions that group or user has.  See the Permissions Table below for details on how to translate the checkboxes into what level of permissions a group or user has.

Grant permission to a folder and its contents

In this example, we will grant access to the ‘Private’ folder found at O:\Administrative\Private.

Open Windows Explorer (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer) and under ‘My Computer’, navigate to falcon on ‘wings’ (O:).

Windows Explorer Private folder

Right click on the departmental folder for which you are administrator and select Properties and then the Security tab.  It may take a moment for the window to refresh with all group or user names.

Wings Security

Click Add…, then type in the Falcon Account of the individual or the exact group name to which you want to give access. If you are adding multiple individuals or groups, separate them with a semi-colon and no spaces as shown below. Once you have added all individuals or groups, click OK.

Add dialog

Highlight the first individual or group name that you just added and check the appropriate permissions boxes. By default, new individuals/groups will have the three boxes checked, as shown below, which gives them read-only access. If read-write or Administrator access is desired, check the appropriate boxes as indicated in the Permissions Table below.

If you only added one individual or group, click OK and your changes will be saved. If you added multiple individuals or groups, click Apply and then repeat for the other groups or individuals you added. When you are through adjusting permissions for all groups or users, click OK.

Set Permissions

If the folder to which you just granted access is at the top level (for example, G:\ Administrative), you are done. If the folder’s parent folder is not publicly readable (as in our example above, G:\Administrative\Private), follow the instructions below to provide navigation access. This will allow the users to which you just gave access the ability to navigate through parent folder to the folder to which you just gave them access.

Caution! This needs to be done carefully if you do not want to grant access to view the entire contents of the parent folder or folders.

Granting Navigation Access to Parent Folders

In the example above, we granted read-write access to the ‘Private’ folder.  In the below instructions, we will now grant Freddy Falcon the ability to navigate to ‘Private’ (through O:\Administrative) without seeing the contents of that parent folder.

While still in Windows Explorer, right click the folder to which you want to grant navigation access and click Properties. Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.

Permissions Advanced

In the Advanced dialog box, click the Add... button.

Advanced Add

Type in the Falcon Account of the individual or exact group name you would like to add and select ‘OK’. Please note that in this Advanced Security Settings box only one individual or group can be added at a time.

Add user

In the Permission Entry dialog box, add these two rights only

  • Traverse folder / Execute file
  • List folder / Read data

Also check the box that says Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only.
Granting these permissions will allow the person or group to see a folder and open it to find the folder to which they have more full access. See the image below.

Advanced Permissions

Select ‘OK’ three times to save changes and close all remaining windows.

Repeat these steps for

  • Other groups or individuals to which you want to give navigational access
  • Other nested folders (if any) that must be navigated through to get to the folder you are sharing
