SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAMNontraditional Training at UW-River Falls: A Unique Experience A 2003 survey of school psychology students at UW-River Falls revealed an age range from 24 to 50, with a mean age of 31. Although some students in the program start immediately following their undergraduate educations, many of our students are considered nontraditional because of their age, work experience, and/or current work schedule. Our program was designed to be particularly appealing to these students, many of whom work during the day, have family to support, or have other competing obligations. To support these students, all school psychology courses begin in the late afternoon or early evening allowing students the freedom to work during the day if desired. Additionally, students typically proceed through the program in four years (including internship) rather than the more standard three year sequence found in most school psychology programs. While not for everybody, many River Falls students appreciate this extended time frame for the completion of graduate school. For more information on nontraditional training at UW-River Falls, please refer to the March 2004 issue of the Communique (Volume 32, issue 6, page 6) , published by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). There you will find an article by two River Falls faculty members and one school psychology student entitled Nontraditional training of school psychologists: Reaching out and strengthening the field (Woitaszewski, Stovall, & Hanson, 2004). For more program information, you can also browse our FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS link or contact one of our faculty members. We'd be happy to discuss nontraditional training components or other facets of our training program.
