Counseling Program
Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I be licensed without a second Master’s degree?
A. Yes, if you have a Master’s degree in a related area/field, you can be licensed by taking selected courses plus the practicum.
Q. How long will it take me to finish the program?
A. The program is a minimum of 40 semester credits. If you go part-time and take 6 credits per semester plus summer, it will take approximately four semesters and one or two summers.
Q. Can I be licensed as a school counselor at a specific level?
A. No, everyone now is licensed at K-12; therefore, you need to complete practicum at each level.
Q. Can I do practicum and continue my employment at the same time?
A. You must complete 600 hours of practicum in the schools during the regular times that K-12 schools are in session. Evening and summer practicum hours are not possible. Hence, you cannot expect to work full time and complete practicum during a single semester. You may work part-time and complete your practicum hours over as many as three semesters. Consult your advisor for details
Q. Can I perform practicum in the school in which I am already employee?
A. Usually not. Consult with an advisor.
