Pre-Engineering SocietyAdvisor: Dr. Dean Olson s Description: The organization will lobby the administration on behalf of pre-engineering students. This includes lobbying for courses that are not currently offered at River Falls and are necessary for an engineering degree. We will promote the pre-engineering program both on and off campus. We will also lobby for consideration of engineering students in non-engineering departments, such as general chemistry classes that focus on material sciences and programming classes that focus on solving engineering problems. We will also provide a forum engineers currently working in industry to visit with students. Currently, much of the physics and chemistry faculty have a strong academic background but lack experience in industry. The pre-engineering club will invite engineers who currently work in industry to talk with students both about there field of work and the process of becoming an engineer. Working with the different engineering departments, we will engineer different projects designed to better explain both engineering and physics. This will include projects to show power production and consumption, alternative energy sources such as biodiesel and solar. Because of the growth in the biomedical engineering field, especially in this geographic region, we will be able to help students network with many industries. Our society will work to promote and improve the pre-engineering program, both by improving the curriculum and getting students prepared for industry. Our society will allow students to talk with experienced engineers who can offer insight with both academic and career goals, and will offer students an opportunity to apply the skills they’ve learned to solve practical problems.
