Graduate Admission to Teacher Education
Initial Teacher Certification


The following procedures are required for ALL graduate students seeking INITIAL certification as a teacher whether or not they are also seeking a degree. Deadline for Fall Semester admission is February 15. Deadline for Spring Semester admission is October 1.

Applying for teacher education is a separate process then applying for graduate school. Being admitted to the graduate School does not guarantee admission to the teacher education program. Most students apply for teacher education during their first semester enrolled at River Falls.

  1. Students seeking INITIAL certification must be eligible for admission to the Graduate School and have an overall GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale within the Bachelor’s degree.

  2. Students must submit evidence of writing, speaking and listening proficiency (usually a C or above in English Composition and Speech).

  3. Students must submit an autobiography describing educational and career histories, experiences working with children and/or youth, interests, long range goals, and reasons for seeking a teaching career.

  4. Students must pass the Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or Computer-Based Academic Skills Assessments (C-PPST) proficiency tests and receive the minimum following scores on each exam.

    Writing (174)
    Mathematics (173).

  5. Students must provide the Graduate Studies Office with official transcripts for all previous undergraduate course work and graduate courses.

  6. Students must complete the Dean’s Questionnaire and Release of Records Authorization.

  7. Students must sign up online to have their files considered. File review dates are October 1st and February 15th.

  8. Students must have a complete and current State of Wisconsin Criminal Background Check form on file. (past background checks will not be accepted.)

  9. A course deficiency evaluation must be on file in the Dean’s office (secondary students should see Mr .Michael Martin, elementary students should see Dr. Tim Holleran.)

  10. A degree plan needs to be on file with the Dean’s Office (secondary education students need to have a content area evaluation on file in addition to their degree plan).

  11. Two recommendation forms are required for admission.

  12. All items listed above must be submitted to the Dean’s Office (203 WEB) by the deadline dates, late materials will not be accepted.

    Graduate Students must have their file reviewed for admission to the Teacher Education program their first semester they are enrolled in the program. Students who are not admitted to Teacher Education will not be allowed to register until they are admitted. Meeting all requirements does not guarantee admission to the Teacher Education Program. The admission to teacher education committee evaluates all applicants and makes its recommendations to the Dean.
