Kinnickinnic Flyfishing Experience
For all you outdoor enthusiasts three Kinnickinnic Flyfishing Experience
events will be held during the 2004 Chiefs Training Camp.
Try your hand at fly fishing on the Kinnickinnic River in River Falls, one
of the most famed trout steams in the Upper Midwest.
UW-RF faculty will present information on the insects of the Kinni, lead an
on-campus fly casting instruction session, and coach fly fishers trying their
skills on the Kinni.
The events will be held on Aug. 4, Aug. 11 and Aug. 18.
Each class is limited to 11 participants.
Each session will last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the cost per person is $30.
The class will meet in the "N" Parking lot on campus. You will need
to provide your own transportation to the Kinnickinnic River.
Bring your fishing gear along, or equipment can be purchased at local stores.
Waders can be purchased at Fleet Farm, 1001 Industrial, Hudson, for about $30.
A Wisconsin fishing license, and trout stamp, will also need to be purchased.
A four-day non-resident Wisconsin license and trout stamp costs $25.25. The
license and trout stamp can be purchased at Lund's Hardware, 201 S. Main St.
Flies can also be purchased at Lund's. Rods will be provided.
Ken Olson, a UW-RF English professor who has been fly fishing for more than
50 years, will teach fly fishing and fly casting fundamentals and strategies.
Olson will also take the class to the Kinnickinnic River and give everyone
a chance to practice casting techniques, and of course the chance to catch The
Big One!
Olson and UWRF biology professor Clarke Garry will also discuss the types of
insects that are found in local rivers and streams. "We will take the class
to the stream and determine what insects are currently present and what flies
would work to catch fish under current conditions." Garry will lead an
in depth discussion on stream entomology. He will net insects currently living
in the south fork of the Kinni to show participants what fish are feeding upon.
Participants can then match what is in the river to flies that will attract
the fish.
