Working on a college campus, I am involved in a large number of
outreach activities. Most of these events are to help promote Career
Services to UWRF students, but some of the activities are to help
train students, to promote other services on campus, or to provide additional
career assistance. A sample of my outreach involvements is listed below:
- Customer Service Training - Due to the success of a training created in the office, I was requested by the Provost (similar to a Vice President on other campuses) to put together a customer service training for student workers throughout the campus. Collaborated with colleagues to adapt the workshop and put together a new workshop that could benefit all students.
- Diversity Training - Provided numereous diversity workshops on campus, in the community, and at conferences. See the presentation or diversity section of this website to learn more.
-
Mardi Gras Event - Originated this event
to help maximize our services to hundreds of students who apply for on-campus
leadership positions each February. Since our small office couldn't possibly accommodate
all of these students for individual appointments in two weeks, we provide a
day of walk-in appointments at a Mardi Gras table in the middle of campus.
Student "Flash" their resumes,
cover letters, and portfolios, and they receive free Mardi Gras beads and
prizes.
- Tip 'n' Treat - Created and organized this fun outreach event which occurs
on Halloween each year. This event is geared towards marketing Career Services
and its programs to all students. It's fast, easy, and cheap. With the success
of this event, it has been replicated on other UW-System campuses.
- M*A*S*H* Event -
M*A*S*H* is a mobile unit, complete with an army ambulance, first aid
supplies, army gear, and stretchers. During Freshmen move-in day,
M*A*S*H* volunteers walk through the dorms helping Freshmen move in, talk
to parents about the transitions they and their students are about to go
through, introduce themselves to
students, and hand out refreshments.
During Spring finals, the M*A*S*H* unit sets up in the middle of campus and holds games, massage tables, haircuts, pet therapy, contests and prizes to help students relax during the stressful finals week. This event is fun for both students and staff!
- Student Teacher Professional Day - This event occurs twice a year, and
provides workshops, speakers, and informative panels about the job search
process for first time teachers. I give a workshop on resume writing to 100+
student teachers and supervise the Peer Advisor team who assist the help
stations.
- Born To Study Event - Harleys, bandanas and leather, and free tattoos!
Sounds like Sturgis, but it is Born To Study at UWRF. This successful
event provides new Freshman with free "Born
to Study Tattoos" and information
on tutoring services and study tips. This creative and eye-catching
event helps students become aware of the importance of good academic
performance!
- Parent Orientation Workshops - Presented informative workshops about
Career Services for parents at Freshman Registration. This seminar helps
parents understand the following: services our office provides, the
developmental career stages their students will go through, and how they can
help their student succeed.
- Vocation and Values Workshop- Volunteered to give this presentation to
students and staff at the Journey House, a River Falls spiritual
organization.
- Career Services Workshops
- Personally provide about 35 presentations on career related topics per
semester at workshops, classes, and events.
