Diversity experience is important in today's workplace, and as a Supervisor of the Career Peer Advisors (PAs), it is essential that I am aware of various diversity issues and incorporate diversity training into the PA program.  Some of the steps that I have taken to achieve these two goals are the following:  provide diversity training opportunities for PAs and the UWRF community, become involved in diversity initiatives on the UWRF campus, and attend 2-3 diversity conferences or workshops a year.

My Role as a Diversity Trainer

  • Co-developed and led a diversity workshop for 50 UWRF Student Development Staff members.  This included the following:  an interactive skit which addressed stereotype issues such as "not jumping to conclusions" and "things aren't always what they seem;" a community map activity which taught staff members about diversity opportunities in their neighborhoods and pushed them to go beyond their comfort level; and a fun activity which allowed staff to physically create something that expressed how they celebrate and accept difference-something they can bring back to their offices for their coworkers and students to see.

  • Created and promoted diversity training opportunities for student staff in our office.  Collaborated with our Japanese exchange students to host three Japanese Etiquette Lessons for our staff and student staff.  And recruited an Ethiopian American staff member to speak to our students which promoted  empathy for issues that international students/co-workers experience.

  • Presented diversity workshops on Faculty and Staff Development Day in 2000 & 2002. Have also provided numereous diversity workshops on campus, in the community, and at conferences. See the presentation or diversity section of this website to learn more.

Outreach to Diverse Student Groups

  • Served as Advisor for student organization, Native American Council. Helped students develop leadership skills, organizational skills, and marketing and teamwork experience.

  • Initiated a mentors group (M&Ms) for incoming students of color which increased retention and utilization of services.

  • Provided workshops for multicultural student organizations and served as a liason between their groups and our office.

  • Developed and led presentations and career activities for the Pre-College Camp program and Upward Bound Student Groups. These programs help students of color, students wih low economic backgrounds and students from disadvantaged backgrouds get access to college.
